I was one of the first people back here.

[He could've even been the first. He doesn't know, and it doesn't matter; what matters is that when he'd returned, there was no one else he knew. As people had begun to return--native citizens, mostly, probably through just normal ways to die when living somewhere like he Aerie--he'd been one of the only people both present and with any knowledge of how to help them.

So even if he hadn't been also distracting himself, taking a break wasn't much of an option. Even as others continued to return, including other Displaced, they still couldn't afford to lose anyone; then, when he'd turned his attention even briefly to the Henries issue, there had been the judgement about not focusing entirely on the relief efforts.

But even without those excuses, and the pressure, and of course his own genuine desire to help, he probably wouldn't have wanted to slow down anyway. The emotional numbness is something he doesn't need his degrees to know is a defense mechanism, and it's one he's had a long time, so he can recognize when it happens and what it means when it does. He also knows it means he's at the point where he can't put off dealing with it any longer, but even if he wanted to, the opportunity isn't really there.]

I can't afford the time needed to deal with things right now.

He knows, of course, that it's entirely possible for such a sentiment to be genuine even from a total stranger, but it still catches him off guard whenever someone makes the offer.

I think being a little out of it's to be expected, so it's amazing you're getting any work done at all.

You know how in bars, restaurants, homes, advertisements, whatever
They have these projections that interface with the implant? Everyone can see the same thing at the same time from a localized source?

I'm trying to create a face mask from it. Essentially projecting another face over your own so if you're walking through a crowd you won't get recognized. It won't hold up under intense scrutiny, but in passing I think it'll be enough.

That's really interesting. Theoretically it does seem like it should work, though you'll have to be really careful with how you map it; humans are very sensitive to even the smallest things being out of place when it comes to faces.

That said, even if it's only good from a distance or a brief glance, that's still way better than how things are now. Sunglasses haven't really been working out too well, so I'll take anything at this point.

Yeah, the uncanny valley effect is something I'd considered. I thought about sourcing features from public media and setting it up to randomize each feature from a different face to make one butt ugly person.

It would still be terrible, but maybe like 30% less creepy than the porcelain doll mannequin-esque alternative.

Actually wait, now that I think about it, I have no idea what year it is in your world or how old you are, so I guess the year doesn't really matter that much.

Thanks, though it'll probably be disappointing since I haven't seen any of them in awhile. I just remember that the motivations made very little sense most of the time, and although it's not unusual for people to react strangely or with a lack of common sense in stressful situations, the prevalence and degree to which it occurs is contrived. So is the seeming complete lack of any attempt to learn from previous mistakes.
